Akit érdekelnek a nemzetközi események, az valószínűleg a hétvégén szorosan figyelemmel követte a törökországi eseményeket. Péntek este/ejszaka mi is elképedve ültünk a TV csatornák/ a Live blogok és a Twitter előtt, próbálva értelmezni a híreket.
Last time there was a military coup in Turkey I was six years old. The one on Friday thus was a surprise because of its format and strategic failure. When the first messages arrived around 10:30pm on Friday I was eating ice cream in Arnavutkoy, Istanbul overlooking the Bosphorus bridge. We were bombarded with messages and pictures of the army closing the bridges, tanks in streets of Ankara, etc. We first thought it was a terror threat so big the police was not enough and that’s why the army was involved. We even joked the soldiers may be after a Pokemon! Then we heard the airspace was closed and jets flying over so began thinking it might involve a hijacked airplane or something. We never thought of a coup attempt! We could see the cars passing over the bridge so didn’t really believe of the news it was shut down by the military. Then flow of messages and pictures intensified so we went home to watch it over TV. By the time we got home it was for sure there was something wrong because of jets flying over, noise of fire shot, visuals of tanks and military over the bridge, Istanbul, Ankara. But we couldn’t understand who the enemy was or who the target was. Then PM Yildirim came on TV live saying there was indeed an attempt of uprising. So it was confirmed. There were news of sikorsky helicopters firing against the Parliament, Ankara police headquarters. Then we heard bombs dropped over the Parliament, public etc. Past midnight I felt very ill and my heart was going crazy. Something was very wrong. Ok I didn’t maybe vote for AKP or Erdogan but this doesn’t mean I would support any coup attempt by the military to overthrow any government, it was unacceptable. Then the coup attempters took over the national TV station TRT. The anchor woman began reading the letter she was given like the old times explaining why they were doing this. An hour later CNN Turk, Dogan Group media did the first face time with President Erdogan from Marmaris, south of Turkey from his holiday! He looked weak, not someone in control but still urged for people to go to the streets to defend democracy and asked people in Istanbul to go to the Ataturk Airport to welcome him there. So we were shocked to hear that he would actually travel to Istanbul by plane when the F16 jets controlled by the “others” in military were flying over. Then we started thinking this must be staged to actually make Erdogan executive president! We were constantly getting messages of bombs being dropped, helicopters firing somewhere in Istanbul, Ankara asking everyone on our contact lists if they were ok, if the bomb hit their house or anywhere near them etc. Then there was a huge jet noise and a huge blast noise which sent us to the ground as my house shook. Kids were sleeping, and neighbors were in our house as we wanted to be together to weather the terror, uncertainty. When the noise and blast so intense as attached was heard the kids jumped off their beds crying and we decided to go to the basement in fear. Not even ISIS or PKK terror had made me fear as much as my own army! Then we started hearing mosques calling out for people to unite, go to the streets and defend democracy. It kept on for hours and hours and we began thinking are we going to become a sharia law country afterwards or something? By 5am, with the call from the President who was now in Istanbul and many AKP officials, the streets were celebrating, police and people attacking the soldiers, some even taking the law to their own hands! They say this defense of democracy has united Turkey, its people from all backgrounds and political beliefs but I’m not so sure. All opposition members declared their support of the government, rejected such a coup attempt and urged people to unify. Former political figures like Gul, Davutoglu etc were also facetiming to calm the country. Then we went to sleep.
This is what happened:
More than 200 were killed, 1500 wounded
Parliament building was attacked
Police stations were attacked
People were in shock and remained indoors. Others were on the streets celebrating, marching for democracy (seems 16th July will be celebrated as national holiday!)
10000 and more from internal ministry, military, public duty have been suspended, many arrested
Turkey blamed Fethullah Gulen and demanded his extradition from the US
US said it needs evidence to do that and said Turkey’s NATO membership was in danger
US shut down the airspace to Turkish planes so no direct flights to and from US to Turkey
Death penalty to punish the coup attempters was brought back to agenda. Germany said death penalty would end Turkey’s EU membership talks
PM Yildirim said if there was such a demand for death penalty by the public they may consider it but it was too early to talk about it! (he failed to reject it)
Tension on the streets continue, we hear true or false news about escalated events by the minute
Bottomline, BIST is down more than 8% as I write. Aviation names crushed close to 20%! TRY weakened passed 2.9850 after the 2.92 levels in the morning. Turkey’s reputation hurt. Its credibility hurt. Its Army which is considered to be among the best is divided. Its police is infiltrated and weak. Party time for the terrorists ISIS and PKK unfortunately, terrible… Did we deserve this? Maybe…
But we will overcome this. We have the power, the man power, the will and desire. It may take time but it will happen. You may not want to catch a falling knife but do not panic and start considering new positions, be selective…CBT rate decision tomorrow, Moody’s rating decision August 5th key.
This is Turkey! Trust in us…
